Cardinals Draft and Signees
Cooper Hjerpe was the Cardinals first pick. He is 6′ 3″ and 200 lbs and a left-handed pitcher from Oregon State University along with being a native of Woodland, California, In his senior season, he struck out 105 batters in 44 innings and threw 4 no-hitters with three of them consecutively. Cooper Hjerpe fanned 17 batters in eight innings of work in a 1-0 win over the Stanford Cardinals. St Louis Cardinals Director of Scout and assistant General Manager Randy Flores considers his left pitching motion as “wonky and deceptive”. Many believe he will move through the minor leagues quickly. He signed for slot value at $3,182,200.
With the second pick at #59, the Cardinals chose another pitcher. Sophomore left-hander Brycen Mautz was 10-2 this season with a 3.87 ERA and 129 strikeouts in 90 2/3 innings for the University of San Diego. Mautz has a mid-90s fastball with improved secondary pitches. He signed for #1.1000,00 which is slightly under slot value.

Pete Hansen, a left-handed pitch from the Texas Longhorns was the third pick at #97. He was their dominant pitcher and a Friday Night guy that kept the rotation stable. His fastball mixed with his off-speed pitches is a deadly duo, often freezing batters as they go down looking. Hansen would lead the Big 12 with 37 strikeouts. His number for this season were enticing to Scouting Director Randy Flores, as Hansen finished with 11-3 record and a 3.76 ERA with 120 strikeouts in 107.2 innings and opponents hit .233. He has NOT SIGNED yet as slot value is $629,800.
The fourth pick went to Jimmy Crooks III a catcher from the University of Oklahoma. He was pick #127 with slot value at $470,300. The 5th player and #157 overall selected by the Cardinals was outfielder Victor Scott II, from the University of West Virginia. The Cardinals are exciting about his speed and how he can disrupt on the base path. Scott was successful on 38 of 45 stolen-base attempts this past season for the Mountaineers. He also can swing for the fence with moderate success. At the pro level, they will harness that in and cut down on his strikeouts, Slot value is set at $350,400 and Scott has NOT SIGNED yet.
