This Season is Now a Sprint and No Longer a Marathon

I met a guy with a Cardinals hat on at Jack’s Restaurant and we chatted a bit about the Cardinals. It dawned on me that time is not on our side. Tonight the team was beaten soundly by the lowly Pirates and now the last week is upon us. Remember at the beginning of the season how I mentioned it was a marathon, not a sprint? Well, the final part of the race is here and we are in trouble.

The onus of this team and the likelihood of not making the playoffs fall squarely on Matheny and the front office. Remeber early in the season how they wouldn’t play the young kids? They were solidly in the corner of the veterans. What happened is too many injuries happened and they were forced to turn to the Memphis Mafia.

These players made the month of September a good one but it is too little, too late. Sad.

Now we turn our lonely eyes to the offseason and hope we don’t hear two phrases from the management.

  1. We were very close to getting that free agent and just missed.
  2. We will fill our team with “low hanging fruit”.

Let’s take a step back and watch to see if they are serious about making this team better and we can decide that by which veterans are still around when Spring Training gets here.
