Thanks for Nothing, Oakland Athletics

Woo hoo! The St. Louis Cardinals have their catcher for the foreseeable future in Willson Contreras, but this week has been pretty frustrating at the same time. We love you Conteras, but for a moment, we must bash the Oakland Athletics.

Just days ago the Athletics wanted an arm, a leg and my social security number for their catcher Sean Murphy. What happened? They ended up trading him for a bag of chips. The chips were not good either. They say, “You snooze, you lose” and that seems to be the case for the Oakland Athletics.

Oakland Athletics Get Fleeced

Sean Murphy’s name has gotten thrown around with the St. Louis Cardinals for months now. The Redbirds were looking for their predecessor to the legendary Yadier Molina and Murphy seemed like the perfect fit. So, what went wrong?

The Oakland Athletics asked for Lars Nootbaar, Brendan Donovan and Gordon Graceffo in an exchange for the All-Star catcher. I typed laughing because that asking price is truly ridiculous. And just like that, the Cardinals sought after Willson Contreras to be the replacement for Yadi.

Oakland asked for the world and received a small patch of land in the middle of Ohio. They received LHP Kyle Muller, RHP Freddy Tarnok, RHP Royber Salinas, UT Esteury Ruiz and C Manny Piña. Say it with me: Who? Thanks for nothing, Athletics.

Murphy was dealt in a three-team trade involving the Atlanta Braves and Milwaukee Brewers. The real reason this enrages me is because the Brewers got better thanks to the poor move by the A’s. Milwaukee acquired William Contreras (the brother of Willson) for just Ruiz. Why the heck were the Brewers even involved in the trade?

At the end of the day, the Athletics bit off more than they could chew with the Cardinals. They saw we were desperate and tried to take advantage of us. They eventually screwed us out of Murphy and gave our division-rival a very quality bat for very cheap. You will not catch me wearing green anytime soon!

Pitching Woes

The St. Louis Cardinals have a very quality pitching rotation, but there is much room for improvement. I was all for being conservative when it came to seeking out pitching from the market, and then we lost Jose Quintana. Now, it is time to make a move.

Rumors have flown around that the Cardinals might be a sleeper to acquire Carlos Rodon, and that would be perfect. We have good arms but lack a true No. 1 guy. Jack Flaherty could be that guy, but we do not know which version of him we are getting. Our Game One starter just walked in free agency.

Adam Wainwright is not the top guy anymore. Miles Mikolas is a good starter but is not the guy either. Jordan Montgomery was electric, until he wasn’t. I do not see an answer within; I think it is time to seek alternative options.

I would love to get an arm signed before the season begins, but would not be upset if we wait things out. Trading for an arm from a team that is selling at the deadline could be the best move. We have an offense that will keep us in every game, it is just a matter of getting that front of the rotation guy.
