Trade Deadline is now over for 2022 and many baseball clubs surrendered some of their top prospects to get a proven commodity. The St Louis Cardinals were able to hang on to almost of all theirs and still have a successful trade deadline. Cardinals President of Baseball Operations John Mozeliak did a great job this year.
The trade deadline saw the loss of two prospects. Pitcher Johan Oviedo and shortstop Malcolm Nunez went to Pittsburgh for pitchers Chris Stratton and lefty Jose Quintana . Oviedo had bounced back and forth from AAA Memphis and the major leagues and made a few starts for the cardinals and it appeared he was not going to stick around bu e a spot starter for the most part. Nunez was the number 13 prospect, according to Baseball America, and was playing with a hot hand with the bat at the end pf July. Both players could get significant time for the rebuilding Pirates.
Now what was rumored at the trade deadline was if they Cardinals wanted any chance of getting Juan Soto in a trade, they had to include top young major league players and top prospect Jordan Walker and #4 prospect Masyn Winn. The deal was never consummated and I am personally happy about it.
Let’s look at the Top Prospects of the Cardinals now that the 2022 trade deadline is complete.
#1- Jordan Walker, 20 years-old, is currently playing AA ball in Springfield at 3B and LF. He is 6’5″ and 220 lbs, bats right and throws right. Walker was drafted by the Cardinals in 2021 as their first pick and #21 overall. He hit .374 at Palm Beach and moved to Peoria where he smacked 8 homers and now is waiting to get the move to AAA Memphis. He has a strong arm and it appears the Cardinals flt they needed to fast track him by moving to the outfield and not third base which is being held by Gold Glover Nolan Arenado. He is likely to make his major league debut in 2023.
#2- Matthew Liberatore is a 6’4′ 200 lbs. left-handed pitcher that has been up and down with the major league club. They seem to indicate he hasn’t been consistent in his games. He was drafted in the first round in the 2018 draft and 16th overall by the Tampa Bay Rays. Then came to the Cardinals in a deal involving Randy Arozarena.
#3- Ivan Herrera is 5′ 11″ and 200 lbs catcher that also has been up and down and used primarily as a backup when Molina was on the DL list. He hasn’t shown the propensity to hit major league hitting but hit .330 or better his first two seasons in pro ball. He is only 22 year of age and has some future for the big club. He is likely the guy for next season.
#4- Masyn Winn is a 5’11” 180 lb. shortstop that throws right and bats right. 2022 in AA has been a huge break out season for him. a good hitter that can find the fastball better than breaking stuff. His arm is the most talked about as he can fire over to first at 95 mph or better. This allows him to cheat up the middle and get to balls in the hole. He has the abilities to help the big club as early as 2024. His skills are coveted throughout baseball.
#5- Gordon Graceffo is 6’4″ and 210 lbs that throws right-handed and a pitcher with a fastball that can reach upwards of 95 mph. He was dominant at the A level but his strikeout rate has dropped at Springfield AA ball. He has the stuff to pitch in the b\g leagues as a mid-rotation starter. He was drafted in the 5th round of the 2021 draft He will likely spend next year in Memphis and ready for the bigs in 2024.
