Zach Duke had Tommy John surgery in 2016 and is working his way back to the major leagues. He had Tommy John surgery to replace a torn left elbow ligament, repair the flexor tendon and remove a bone spur. He is expecting a return in August.
On Monday, the Memphis Redbirds defeated Fresno 9-0 on the strength of 7 runs in the top of the 9th. The offense was out in full force as Harrison Bader was 4-for-5, Paul DeJong three hits including his 10th homer, Nick Martini had two hits, Patrick Wisdom smacked a home run and Rangel Ravelo knocked in two runs. The team had a total of 14 hits on the day.
The pitching was stellar as John Gant started and lasted 4 innings allowing three hits while walking two and fanning two batters. He has a game score of 65. Josh Zeid pitched one scoreless inning as did Mike Montgomery. John Brebbia tossed for two innings and allowed only one hit. Ryan Sherriff finished the game with two strikeouts in the 9th.
Mike Mayers (3-4, 5.27 ERA) will take the mound for the Redbirds as a new series begins in Sacramento with game time scheduled for 9:05 CT
The Springfield Cardinals defeated NW Arkansas 4-0 behind outstanding pitching from Jack Flaherty. He threw 7.2 innings allowing only 3 hits and no earned runs while walking four and striking out three batters. His game score was 75 and his record improved to 7-1 on the season. He was relieved by Kevin Herget who continued the shutout with one hit in 1.1 innings of work.
The offense was led by right fielder Jose Adolis Garcia who was 3-for-3 in the game including his 5th home run of the season. Jacob Wilson also homered for his 7th of the year. The game lasted 2 hrs. and 20 minutes with 3,179 in attendance.
At this time, the Springfield Cardinals had not named a starter for the 7:05 PM game at Corpus Christi on Tuesday.
Palm Beach Cardinals were 6-1 winners on Monday over Lakeland. Randy Arozarena was the offensive star by going 4-for-5 with his 4th home run of the year. Jose Godoy drove in one run.
Junior Fernandez was the winning pitcher (3-1) with 7.1 innings on the mound as he gave up 9 hits but only one earned run with 2 walks and one strikeout. Sam Tewes followed him to the hill and pick up his first save of the year as he struck out 4 batters in 1.2 innings. The game took 2 hours and 40 minutes to play with 1,523 in attendance.
Tuesday finds Zac Gallen as the starter with 6:30 ET as the start time in Lakeland.
The Peoria Chiefs managed only two hits as they lost to Quad Cities 6-1. The Chiefs also fanned 10 times in the game. Ian Oxnevad remains winless (0-4) by allowing 6 hits and 2 earned runs in 7.2 innings of work. The real blow came as Brady Bowen pitched 0.1 and gave up 3 hits and two runs.
Steven Farinaro (1-3, 6.89 ERA) starts on Tuesday on the road against the Quad Cities with first pitch scheduled for 6:35 CT.
On May 23rd in Cardinals History
- Cardinals pitcher Mort Cooper wasn’t happy about his salary and made all kinds of comments about quitting. Before he could accomplish this, he was traded to the Braves for Red Barrett. Cooper won 20 games for the Cardinals in three different seasons.
- Von McDaniel was signed by the Cardinals three weeks after his high school graduation in 1957 for $50,000 in bonus money. He would make his successful debut with the Cardinals in June of 1957.
